Why Is Traffic So Bad on the Amalfi Coast?

There are a few reasons:

  1. Narrow Roads: The SS163, the main coastal road, was never designed for modern traffic. It hugs cliffs, snakes through tiny villages, and in many places, it’s only wide enough for one vehicle at a time — especially when buses or delivery trucks pass through.
  2. High Tourist Volume: From May to September, the Amalfi Coast welcomes thousands of tourists every day. Buses, scooters, rental cars, taxis, and private transfers all share the same narrow road.
  3. Limited Parking: There’s very little room to pull over or park along the road. That means drivers often have to wait for drop-offs or coordinate very carefully in towns like Positano or Amalfi.
  4. One-Way Restrictions: In recent years, to manage congestion, authorities have introduced alternating one-way systems and vehicle restrictions on certain days. This can cause confusion for tourists — but as an experienced local driver, I always stay updated on the latest rules to make the trip smoother for my guests.
